Two materials account for most repipe calls in older valley homes. These are illustrations of the material and its failure mode, drawn so you can recognize what is in your own garage.
Polybutylene is usually stamped PB2110 and is most often gray. Disinfectants in city water react with the plastic and flake it apart from the inside. The 1995 class action settlement closed its claim window long ago, so replacement is the owner's expense.
Galvanized supply pipe was common from the 1920s through the 1950s and corrodes from the inside out. The threaded joints are the thinnest point and fail first. Flow drops across the whole house long before a leak ever appears.

You can, and sometimes a budget makes that the only path. It costs more in total, because access and setup get paid for twice. It also leaves old pipe feeding new pipe, which does not solve a whole house pressure complaint.
