A garbage disposal fails in three ways. It jams and hums, it loses power and goes silent, or it leaks. Jams and tripped resets are cheap fixes. A leak from the body seam means the housing has rusted through and the unit is finished. Leaks at the flange or the dishwasher inlet are repairable.

Kitchen waste cools and coats the inside of the drain a little at a time. The build up narrows the pipe until the disposal cannot push water away. This is why a sink that fills during use is often a drain problem wearing a disposal costume.
Water in the cabinet comes from one of three places. It is the sink flange above, the dishwasher hose at the side, or a rusted body seam. The first two are repairs. The third means the unit has finished its life.

Often yes, and the hex wrench that came with the unit exists for exactly that. Turn the power off at the wall switch and the breaker first.
What catches people out is the object causing the jam. A fragment of glass or a bone chip can lodge in the chamber and re-jam the plate.

The thing worth checking is horsepower and the mount. A cheap unit on an old mounting assembly can be more work to fit than a better one.
The plumbing side is the flange seal, the drain arm, the trap and the dishwasher inlet, and those are where the leaks and blockages happen.
If the fault turns out to be the switch or the circuit, that is electrical work. You should be told so rather than sold a unit.
Water helps, but it does not change what happens further along the pipe. Grease and starch cool in the branch line and stick to the wall of the pipe.

A hum means the motor is getting power but the grinding plate cannot turn. Something is wedged between the plate and the chamber wall. Leaving the switch on while it hums overheats the motor. Power should be off at the wall and at the breaker before anything else.
Once the obstruction is out and the plate turns freely, the overload reset on the underside brings the unit back. Many disposals that get replaced were only ever jammed.
It is a small red or black button on the bottom of the unit, facing the floor of the cabinet. It pops out when the motor draws too much current, which happens after a jam or a long grind. Pressing it back in restores power to the unit.
If it trips again within seconds, the jam is still there. Repeated resets on a stuck plate are what burns a motor out for good.
There are three candidates and they are easy to tell apart. Water running down the outside of the unit points to the sink flange above it. Water at the side fitting points at the dishwasher hose. Water dripping from the bottom seam means the housing itself has corroded through.
Only the third one is fatal. A body leak cannot be sealed, because the water is coming through the shell of the unit.
Clark County Code 22.02.195 lists clearing stoppages and repairing leaks in pipes, valves or fixtures among the work needing no permit. A like for like disposal swap that leaves the concealed piping alone is that kind of work. The building department for your address is the authority on it.
Rewiring or adding a circuit is a different question and sits with the electrical rules rather than the plumbing exemption.
The dishwasher drains through the side of the disposal. A blockage in the disposal or the branch drain sends that water into the sink. On a new installation the cause is often the knockout plug inside the disposal inlet. It has to be removed before the dishwasher hose is connected.
If the plug was never taken out, the dishwasher has had nowhere to drain since the day it was fitted.
Fats, oils and grease belong in the trash, because they cool and coat the inside of the pipe rather than washing away. Fibrous vegetable waste such as celery and artichoke wraps around the plate. Rice and pasta swell. Bones and fruit pits jam the mechanism outright.
Coffee grounds are the sneaky one. They pack down into a dense sludge in the trap and build up over months.
No verified lifespan figure is published on this site, because the honest answer depends almost entirely on what has been put down it. What can be said is that units are replaced for corrosion or a seized motor, rarely for anything in between.
A unit that has been jammed repeatedly usually goes first. Each forced restart puts strain on the motor and the drive mechanism.
People do, and the physical fit is not complicated. Three details catch homeowners out. The first is supporting the weight of the unit while twisting it onto the mount. The second is aligning the drain arm to the trap, and the third is the dishwasher knockout plug.
The other one is the old mounting ring. When it has corroded to the sink, it can take longer to remove than the whole rest of the job.
